Marisa Brandt, Teaching Professor in the History, Philosophy, & Sociology of STEM discusses how a first-year writing course can help create 21st century STEM students with foundations for interdisciplinary inquiry? Drawing on training in writing pedagogy, Critical Cultural Communication Studies, and Science Studies, Professor Brandt is leading an effort at Lyman Briggs College to rethink the Tier 1 writing course, LB 133, as an opportunity to foster reflective experiential learning that demonstrates the value of humanistic and social science inquiry to STEM education. Professor Brandt discusses how her work is structuring the curriculum to engage STEM students in knowledge production in ways that aim to acculturate them as collaborative, ethical, and empathetic learners.
